Charged With Drug Possession?

If you have been arrested on a drug possession charge, you probably feel like your life has been turned upside down. You may not know who to turn to or who can help you through this difficult time. Shauna Rhodes is an experienced drug crimes lawyer, and she can help you understand the facts of your case. She will investigate each aspect of the circumstances surrounding the alleged crime, including:

  • Whether prosecutors have solid evidence against you
  • Whether there is an informant, and if that source is credible
  • Whether law enforcement agencies followed all state and federal laws when investigating your case

Drug laws in Maryland are very strict and if you are charged with possession, your future is at stake. If you are accused of possessing any controlled substance, like marijuana, prescription drugs, cocaine or opium, you could face serious penalties.

Penalties For Drug Possession

The penalties for possessing illegal drugs are harsh in Maryland. The maximum penalty stands at $25,000 and up to four years in prison.

However, Section 5-614 puts more stringent charges against individuals who are accused of possessing high quantities of controlled substances. In cases like these, additional charges such as intent to sell or drug trafficking may be levied. For example, if you are accused of possessing any of the below quantities of controlled drugs, you could face up to 25 years in incarceration and $50,000 in fines:

  • 28g cocaine
  • 4g of opium/morphine
  • 1,000 units of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD)
  • 28g of phencyclidine (PCP)

At Rhodes Law Firm, LLC, we are committed to defending you to the best of our ability. Led by attorney Shauna Rhodes, we have considerable experience in working with clients accused of a variety of drug charges, and we will work hard to identify possible loopholes in the prosecution's case.

Fighting Conviction In Maryland

We defend clients who are facing a wide range of drug possession charges involving both illegal drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, and prescription drugs such as OxyContin and Vicodin. We have experience in dealing with charges such as:

  • Simple possession
  • Possession with intent to distribute
  • Conspiracy to distribute
  • Prescription fraud
  • Hand-to-hand drug distribution
  • Illegal possession of prescription medication

Being convicted of any of these charges could have long-term consequences. Even if jail time is not involved, the conviction will go on your permanent record, which could affect your ability to find a job, apply for a home loan or even obtain professional licensure.

Building A Solid Defense

In all drug possession cases, the search and seizure methods followed by law enforcement agencies must be heavily scrutinized. If the search was unlawful, the evidence gathered could be suppressed. For example, drug seizures made at unlawful traffic stops may be able to be considered inadmissible in court. We will work toward building a solid defense strategy based on the unique circumstances of your case, with the goal of having the charges against you reduced or dismissed entirely.
